Anger is the outburst. Aggressive music holds a state; angry music loses control. The difference is audible: aggression has structure, anger has cracks.
How to recognize it
By sudden shifts — entrances with no warning, cutoffs mid-bar, tempo shifts. By overdrive as a stylistic device: sounds that are deliberately too loud and distort as a result. And by dissonance without resolution, often with clusters in the low register.
Angry music is rarely long. It works in bursts of twenty to forty seconds, because the state it describes doesn't last.
What it's suited for
For escalation: conflict scenes, fight sequences, protest and crisis footage, game trailers in the final battle, horror passages after the break, moments of sports defeat. Also as a contrast surface — a few seconds of anger make the calm afterward feel bigger.
What it's not for: corporate use. There's hardly an image film that anger helps. Anyone who needs emphasis is better served with intense.
