Tense is the state right before the decision. Not the conflict — that's dramatic. Not the threat — that's dark. But the waiting for it, knowing something is about to happen.
How to recognize it
Built on a pulse that won't let go: an ostinato in the low strings, a ticking in the percussion, a pulsing synthesizer. The beat is there, but it leads nowhere — that's exactly what creates the tension.
Add to that narrow intervals in the melody, mostly stepwise motion instead of leaps, and harmony that stays in place. Tense music rarely modulates; a change would mean relief.
What it's suited for
For anything building toward something: countdowns, negotiations, sports moments before the decision, crime and investigation, gaming passages under time pressure, product reveals just before the unveiling. Also works as a bed for explainer sequences building toward a punchline.
What it's not for: long stretches. Tense music wears you down; after three minutes without resolution it tires rather than carries. It needs an after — usually intensive or heroic.
