Melancholic
Descending lines, plenty of space: a heaviness that needs no reason.

Melancholic is not the same as sad. Sadness has a cause; melancholy has none. It's a state, not an event — a heaviness that remains even when nothing happens.
How to recognize it
You can hear it in minor with added tones: minor sevenths, ninths, suspensions that resolve late or not at all. In descending lines — the melody moves downward more often than upward. And in space: lots of reverb, widely voiced chords, pauses where the last note still lingers.
The tempo is usually between 60 and 90 beats. Faster would feel restless, slower would feel solemn.
What it's suited for
For in-between moments: flashbacks, reflective moments in documentaries, autumn and winter footage, cityscapes in the rain, literary material, podcasts on serious topics, memory sequences, credits after heavy films.
What it's not for: advertising. Melancholy doesn't sell anything — it invites you to linger, which is the opposite of what a commercial aims to achieve.
