Music for Instagram, TikTok & Reels:
what businesses need to know

The trending chart song from the app goes under the Reel in seconds – and quickly becomes a problem for businesses. Why built-in music catalogs are often off-limits for brand and advertising content, what applies differently on each platform, and how you can solve this cleanly across platforms.

The costly mistake: "The app already has the music built in"

Instagram and TikTok offer huge music libraries right when you're creating reels and clips. The catch: the trending chart hits are usually licensed for private, non-commercial use only. As soon as a business, brand, or advertising account uses the same music, the right license is missing.

The consequences range from a muted audio track to removal of the post to suspension of the account – in the worst case, you risk a cease-and-desist letter. "Gemafrei" or "available in the app" doesn't automatically mean "cleared for advertising."

What's different on each platform

Every platform has its own rules – and their catalogs can't be carried over to other channels. An overview (current as of now; platform terms may change):

Instagram / Facebook Sound Collection nur Meta-Plattformen TikTok Commercial Music Library nur Business-Konten YouTube / Shorts Content ID Claim möglich → Whitelisting
The built-in catalogs each apply only to their own platform – and usually only to a limited extent for businesses.

In concrete terms: you can't reuse the Instagram/Facebook Sound Collection on YouTube or TikTok. And anyone publishing the same clip across multiple channels — the norm today — needs music cleared for all platforms and for commercial use. For YouTube, there's also the Content ID logic to consider; you can read how to handle it in Resolving a Content ID Claim Despite Using Royalty-Free Music.

One License for All Channels

The clean solution for businesses is royalty-free production music: professionally produced music whose usage rights sit with a single provider. With one license, you use the track commercially across all platforms — without being tied to a single catalog. What royalty-free really means is explained in the article Royalty-Free Production Music.

A royalty-free license covers commercial use across all channels — one catalog instead of four.

If you post across platforms, you need music that's cleared everywhere – not four different app catalogs with four different restrictions.

Quick tips for Reels & TikToks

What music needs to deliver in short vertical videos.

⏱

The first seconds count

In Reels and TikToks, the opening decides everything. A track with a clear intro grabs attention instantly.

🎚

Music supports, it doesn't dominate

For dialogue or voice-over, pull the music back — an instrumental or loop version helps.

✂

Timed to the cut

Short versions and loops fit cleanly onto cuts and transitions — no editing required.

📄

Keep proof on hand

The license certificate and invoice document your usage rights — in case a platform asks.

One sound for every channel

GEMA- and GVL-free production music for Reels, TikToks, and Shorts — cleared for commercial use on every platform, with proof of license and proof of clearance.
